My rupture?

Though possibly headache inducing, the lo-fi pastiche (can you count the '80s references) of this video for "Ageing Had Never Been His Friend" by Goteborg, Sweden's Love is All is nothing if not endearing, and, video aside, the song itself is fantastic.

New York indie label What's Your Rupture? included Love is All on the recent four-way split EP, Imagine the Shapes. Also with four tunes on the disk, Sheffield, England's The Long Blondes, who need little introduction. Check out their "Giddy Atmospheres" here or here.

New fruits

Spring is here, and new albums are on the way.

Kristopher Astrom's Rainaway Town is due out on April 18th on Startracks/V2. You can find out more at his Myspace page. The latest single, Just A Little Insane, has a heavier dose of the country-swing that has always been apparent on his past releases--think '99s Poor Young Man's Heart with Hidden Truck.

Speaking of Astrom's older tunes, here's great Hieronymus Bosch/Brueghel inspired video for his 2004 single The Wild, with the wonderful Britta Persson.

Trust Trost

Here's the new video for In dienen Raum from Annika Line Trost's second solo album, Trust Me.

Should it leave you wanting more, which I'm sure it will, get to her website or check her out on Myspace. Also, take a look at her other project, Cobra Killer.

Takk...

416pxskandinavism_1Thanks tinyWays!

In addition to the great depth of Nordic indie MP3's regularly available on the site, tinyWays has posted songs from Robert Altman's film version of Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.

Somewhat off the indie "path", but a welcome addition in the spirit of so-called pan-Scandinavianism, however you define it.

tinyWays doesn't allow hotlinks to the tunes, so go to the site to listen. The standouts: the faux advert for Jens Jensen's Herring and the Woody Harrelson/John C. Reilly singing-cowboy duet, Bad Jokes.

In other news...

Thanks also to Alex Ross for a topical side-by-side examination of the recent Beethoven and Shostakovich symphonic cycles at Lincoln Center.

Reykjavik_4 More tunes for your listening pleasure. Check out the band's page, or open the music files...

1. Hellsongs is a trio from Göteborg, Sweden who specializes in acoustic covers of metal classics. Harriet Ohlsson's gorgeous voice adds a whole new layer to Judas Priest's Breaking the Law.

2. 7 Dollar Taxi hails from Lucerne, Switzerland. Jurassic Heads is a nice little post-pop ditty, with a distinctive early-'60s mod vibe.

3. Also from Göteborg, Detektivbyrån make incredibly melodic folk instrumentals, like E18, from their Hemvägen EP.

4. Lára is a singer/songwriter/instrumentalist who seems to split her time between her home country of Iceland and Spain. Not a bad situation. Check out Þusund Fjoll.

5. Finally, from Portland, Oregon, The Joggers put a fine post-punk edge on their cover of Yes' Long Distance Runaround. They're smart, they've got a great ear, and chops to match.

Playlist

Not one to regularly jump on so-called "band-wagons", but in the course of researching Scandinavian rock and pop music I've become completely obsessed by the sounds currently coming out of the Nordic realm. I'll broaden the geographic scope a bit more in some upcoming playlists, but here are 8 songs (and Myspace pages) by Swedish indie artists, and 2 by Icelanders, that I highly recommend you check out...

  1. Stockholm_011Marble!, Johnny Johhny
  2. Britta Persson, Winter Tour
  3. De små nyanserna, Katten Rastlos
  4. The Chrysler, The Strange is Fading
  5. Martina Nilsdotter (w/Stefan Sundstrom), Nat som glimta till
  6. Kristofer Åström, The Blackest Pond
  7. La Puma, Sweet
  8. Idoru, Where I Am
  9. Apparat Organ Quartet, Global Capital
  10. Mammút, Thorkell

Boldly going

Startrek6goldkey Though I've long been a fan of the numerous Star Trek story-lines, primarily the original series and its film spin-offs, I've never considered myself a Trekkie/Trekker. Never owned a uniform, phaser or communicator. Never wore Vulcan ears, though a horrible sunburn at age 9 had nearly the same effect.

So, when I was given the chance to attend the Sacramento Star Trek convention this past Sunday to shoot some photos for
the Sacramento News & Review (the
staff photographers were all otherwise occupied that day), I was a bit surprised at how giddy I was feeling about the assignment. Suddenly I was watching
every bit of Trek I could, as though prepping myself for a role, re-acquainting myself with the subtler details of the Enterprise crew and its exploits.

At the heart of my excitement was the fact that both Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner would be appearing together to celebrate Star Trek's 40th anniversary. I respect both men for their work on the show (of course), but I'm a bigger fan of their genuine wit, and their openness to self-parody. Both men do some fantastic charitable work, and moreover neither of them let their celebrity overshadow the charities they work for.

Nimoy1_1 When I lived in Boston back in the early '90s, my apartment was just down the street from the Vilna Shul, a synagogue, built in 1919, on Phillips Street in Beacon Hill. Its congregation had shrunk, and the building had been left vacant for 15 years before it was beautifully restored in 1990. Mr. Nimoy was on the Advisory Board that helped bring new life to the shul as a place of worship and community. Yet his participation was never the focus of the project, a testament to his character that has always stuck with me.

Having never attended a Star Trek convention, I was expecting all the stereotypes, and I wasn't really disappointed. It must be said, though, that the fans (credit where credit is due, they're more dedicated than I) were a friendly and accommodating bunch, not as nit-picking or as "Trekkier-than-thou"
as they are so often portrayed.

Needless to say Shatner and Nimoy were in top form: extraordinarily entertaining and personable. I could have listened to their banter all day.Shatnernimoy2_4

"Rob, over here!"

21sceneheard1  A couple snaps of Mr. Cockeyed.com himself, Rob Cockerham, with his wife Stacy and daughter June at the Cockeyed.com "Paparazzi Photo Contest". Didn't have room to use these photos with my piece in the Sacramento News & Review, so here they are.

Sweet cup-holders! Rob, Stacy and June caught by yours truly, before most of the other paparazzi had caught on to their presence. Once a few flashes started going off, the game was truly on.

21sceneheard2_3

Here's Rob exiting the restroom, and boy, does he look happy. I thought hard about following him in, but decided against it. Obviously, I'm not cut from true paparazzi material.
